The “VIII International Landscape Workshop” was convened in Malaga in October 2016, in the Auditorium of the Picasso Museum in Malaga, as the end of a seven-year cycle of the Workshop in different cities and the beginning of a new format precisely in the city where this educational and professional initiative began.

In this sense, it would also be a good opportunity for this new cycle to modify its format with a more professional offer in the form of a “Congress”, where the teaching and professional scales come closer together, providing feedback thanks to this new Workshop modality, which above all should preserve the interactivity of previous stages between participants and speakers, thus strengthening its main characteristic of collective and participative debate. All this in order not to lose one of its greatest virtues, that of continuous feedback between the theory and practice of architectural and urban discourse, which would ultimately be the concept of the scale of the landscape that the Workshop advocates as an urban and territorial project for the city.

The idea of this change of format forces us to professionalise the Workshop with the main objective of having a more powerful impact on the city’s problems and on the capacity to disseminate its results, in order to be able to influence, with the subsequent publication of its contents, with the Monographs collection of the GEOMETRIA Journal, those who are responsible for making the city’s decisions. To this end, the new format requires greater professional rigour to be able to approach these problems of the city, pointing out possible lines of conceptual action, but also projectual, from this active and joint reflection of attendees and speakers. Precisely this interaction between the analysis of the examples given by the speakers, intentionally aimed at specifying and analysing the existing problems in the city under analysis, and the intertwined debate with the participants in terms of reflection and the definition of lines of action, would be the objective of this new congress format of the Workshop.
