Projecting a tower for hotel use in the “Dique de Levante” of the Port of Malaga was the objective of the Concession Competition convened by the Port Authority. Its strategic position in the platform of Levante, originated by the extension of the port enclosure and remodeling of the “Muelle 1 and 2” of its relational border with the city, forced to take into account some important aspects of scale and landscape in its relation with the profile “Port -City” that had already been produced with this remodeling.
Estudio Segui bet on a simple but powerful image in reference to the scales of the big cruisers, port cranes and other infrastructures that form part of that port landscape, fleeing from a grandiloquence shape that would have provoked a visual protagonism not suitable for this port profile. Both its height of 35 floors, distributed in a base adapted to the height of the adjoining building of the Cruise station, and topped by an ellipse tower with its double facade skin (glazed with “vaulted folds” to reduce the section of the support profile and so to improve its behavior to the pressure of the sea air and to allow spectacular views of the sea and the city from all its rooms), and its aim of sustainability and energy saving with a system of visors which border its entire perimeter to achieve better defenses to the sun and controlled natural airings, solve a subtle image that can represent an image of attractive modernity in that reference with the City and as “gateway” to the powerful cruise tourism that has now generated the new remodeling of the Port of Malaga.
